We used to have a quota system for the admission to the local universities, before it was repealed by our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad. The disadvantages of the quota system is that, its act slightly unfair and eventually caused the Malays student to becoming more incompetent and weak. This due to the fact that, they feel very easy and need not to struggle in order to place themselves in the local universities.
Today the system is based on meritocracy. This system has induced a massive change in the area of the statistics of the student getting into the local universities. There has been said and stated that, the first year under the meritocracy implementation, the Malays mantain their chart as the biggest group of getting into the local U. While there has been an increase of the amount of the Chinese students, the Indians was said to be left out. They enjoyed 5% of students quota, before dropped to about 3 and 4% after the implementation of meritocracy.
Now this is fair, and just. We should look from positive point of view, wherebout the system will increase more competition and produce better and more quality students. Nevertheless, there are still quota system is being used in our economic field. For example in construction, in granting license, housing development, and etc etc.
This is how we distinguish between the economy and education. Although many of us are of the opinion that we should abolish the quota system in any field of this country may concerned, we must be tolerance and help each other too. Having said that, the quota system is still needed in certain part of our economic sector, to help the new-comers to build up their names and gain experience, especially the Malays. We noticed that during the British’s reign, they separated the Malays, Chinese and the Indians into various part of economic field. Im sure we all appreciate on what has been done by our Chinese tycoon, in providing us good sevices and boost up our economy. Now the Chinese can help the Malays or Indian or maybe others to teach their friends on what is business really means, with a small portion of quota to assist these new-comers. There should be no problems or woes. It should not be a woe in the first place, as the Chinese was introduced to business by our former British earlier than the Malays or Indians.
The British gave everything they know to assist the Chinese in running various type of businesses in this country. They have started early with those opportunity been given to them. Then how could you say that this policy isn’t fair? Think wisely
They grabbed this opportunity and sucessfully established a very strong entity where Chinese are always regarded as business tycoon, as it is a metter of facts that the equity possession are vested in their hands.
Believe me, this quota system will be abolished someday. But not now, it aint happen.

why are you so sure the quota system will be abolish? i believe that quota system had given a credits till today..
sidiq,
i mark your word on the quota system that will be abolished. i believe in that coz nothing impossible. everything tends to change..
it was helpless.. it cant be avoided.. quota system ada kepentinganya sehingga ke hari ini.. competition is not more the issue.. people might compete by all means to achieve their goals
im sure that most of the malays would feel offended with my last line that this privilages will be abolished someday. some of the comments are in line with it. If we are competent enough, we should help those who are incompetent. this privilages someday will teach us on helping those incompetent folks.
When it is so easy to get the cheese, how many will bother to work hard to compete for it?
Malay are competent just like anybody. The wrong is the system which did not facilitate to groom the Malays.
Definitely, by setting aside quota for business and education wouldn’t help. We have enought of NEP when it could only help the malay to achieve 18%+ share of the country’s wealth. The move to abolish the quota system is right. Quota system is not the best way to help the malay. Let’s move forward.
